Sheet Sanders Information
Sheet sanders are commonly known as
Finishing Sanders or
Orbital Sanders. They are based around the dimensions of a standard sheet of sandpaper and are typically categorised according to how much of this sheet they use (1/2 sheet, 1/3 sheet or 1/4 sheet). A
1/2 Sheet Sander is usually a fairly large and heavy machine which is ideal for larger surface areas, while a compact
1/4 Sheet Sander is usually gripped in the palm of the hand and will fit into much tighter spaces. In all cases, one of the main advantages of a
Sheet Sander is that the rectangular shaped sanding pad is ideal for working up against solid borders and for sanding into corners, for example when working on a windowsill or a recessed panel.
Sheet Sander Safety:
Be aware that many paints and building materials, especially in older properties, can contain hazardous materials like lead and asbestos. Even relatively benign materials can be harmful or at the very least irritating once they are turned into fine dust so take care to ascertain there is no health risk before commencing a project, and wear suitable PPE for the job (for example
eye protection and
respiratory protection).
